Introduced as a quick fix without any real research , to try and reduce the number of dog attacks, has BSL done or doing It’s job? Absolutely NOT. There Is no evidence from Australia or elsewhere to justify that It Is. If anything It has given society as a whole a false sense of security, thinking that dogs not on the list are safe. The truth Is ANY breed of dog has the potential and ability to cause harm, there are lots of factors involved, not just based on breed alone. Breed alone Is a poor indication of whether a dog Is more likely to be aggressive towards humans.
Taken From The Official U.K.C Breed Standard.
Characteristics Of The APBT:
" The essential characteristics of the American Pit Bull Terrier are strength, confidence, and zest for life. This breed is eager to please and brimming over with enthusiasm. APBTs make excellent family companions and have always been noted for their love of children."
Also this:
"The APBT is not the best choice for a guard dog since they are extremely friendly, even with strangers."
The Pit Bull has been breed for centuries to be a human-friendly dog.
Having said this, there will always be a minority that are out of character.
All breeds of dogs will have some individual dogs that are and can be aggressive , so why punish a whole breed on the mistakes of the minority?
